Introsea’s Webinar Series #5 brought together 500 stakeholders, academics, and officials to explore unlocking the high-value economic potential of Indonesian seaweed. Experts emphasized sustainable aquaculture, innovation, and regional safety standards to transform the sector into a safer, more sustainable, and lucrative industry across Southeast Asia.
Bangkok, Thailand, 28 August 2026 — Introsea (Indonesia Tropical Seaweed Association), one of Indonesia’s largest seaweed communities, hosted Webinar Series #5, titled “Unlocking the High-Value Economic Potential of Indonesian Seaweed,” bringing together around 500 participants, including government, seaweed farmers, business owners, industry workers, practitioners, and academics across Indonesia.
Speaking at the webinar, Muhamad Nour, Project Manager/Technical Advisor of the of SEAFDEC’s Blue Horizon Seaweed Project, highlighted the importance of strengthening regional standards and guidance for a sustainable seaweed industry, including occupational safety and health (OSH) in seaweed aquaculture. He emphasized that regional efforts to promote sustainable production and safer working conditions are essential to protecting the economic, environmental, and business interests of the seaweed sector, while safeguarding the wellbeing of farmers and workers throughout the industry.
The webinar explored the opportunities and challenges facing Indonesian seaweed, including innovation, value addition, and its potential to become a higher-value commodity while strengthening sustainability across the industry.
Other speakers included Prof. Ir. Sukoso, M.Sc., Ph.D. of Brawijaya University, Malang; Dr. Hendra Gunosewoyo of Curtin University, Perth; and Shandion Santoso, BA MEng of UC Berkeley, USA. The discussion provided diverse perspectives from academia, industry, and practitioners on unlocking the future potential of Indonesia’s seaweed sector. The strong participation of approximately 500 online participants and total 2,300 views on Youtube Introsea reflected the growing interest in transforming seaweed into a more sustainable, inclusive, safe, and high-value industry in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia.
The Blue Horizon Seaweed Aquaculture is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) through WWF US as GEF Agency, executed by SEAFDEC PMU, BFAR – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Philippines, and DFiS – Department of Fisheries and Surveillance Viet Nam.
